This talk gave an overview of TV display technology, current developments and the prospects for a variety of new technologies which are at the prototype stage. The talk also highlighted the work of the EBU Production Displays Group, both in terms of the documenting the broadcasters' expectation of consumer displays, and requirements for and testing of broadcast grade monitors.

Richard Salmon is a Senior Research Engineer at Kingswood Warren (BBC Research & Development). He has been involved in many different projects over the years, with a particular interest in displays, colorimetry, video compression, video watermarking, HDTV, visual perception and video systems engineering. He has also spent six months on attachment to NHK's Science & Technical Research Laboratories in Japan, working on Plasma Display technology.

Mr Salmon is chairman of the EBU project group P/Display, which has specified the broadcasters' requirements for the use of flat panel displays in TV production environments, and guidance to consumer display manufacturers on how the broadcasters expect the TV display to present the delivered TV images. He is active in the DTG's HD displays and professional monitors groups, and is a member of the Society for Information Display, the SMPTE and the IET.
